Wintonbury Cemetery, Wintonbury, Bloomfield

Located: From Bloomfield Center (intersection of Rt 178 and Rt 189), go north on Rt 189. The cemetery is on the right.

Google Maps Visuals: satellite view roadside view

Type of site: Town cemetery, no longer in use

Condition: Well attended to and landscaped, many of the broken stones have been repaired.

History and Notable Features: This particular cemetery has one of the largest collections of pre-1800s stones in the area and is characterized by an abundance of headstones created from the characteristic red stone. These stones are quite beautiful and for the majority, exceedingly legible. The footstones for most of the headstones are with their counterparts also, which is highly unusual. The day we made the trek out there, it began to rain so the pictures are not the best. However, this is definitely a place that deserves a revisit.
