Type of Site: Public cemetery, still in use

Condition: Very well maintained, nicely landscaped and artfully laid out

History and Notable Features: Hillside Cemetery was created as a garden-style cemetery. Most of the prominent Torrington figures of the post-1900s, such as the Hotchkiss-Fyler Family and Major Besse, are buried here. The stones are not piled on top of each other as they are in so many other local cemeteries. If you were looking for a great picnicking place, this would make a delightful scene -- provided you pick up after yourself!
